“Seventeen years ago we walked up a long dirt driveway and stared out over a big dirt field with a single wooden stake in the middle of it. ‘This is it,’ I told my husband, ‘let’s buy it and build our new house here’. It wasn’t a very impressive sight, but I could see beyond the dirt to the sun setting over the beautiful trees, separating what would become our neighborhood from the horse farm next just behind us.
More importantly, I could imagine a beautiful grassy yard, maybe a swimming pool in the back, with a house that would meet the needs of our family of six. We were already living in Olney; my kids were well settled in the area schools, played on local sports teams and had tons of friends. I loved the fact that we wouldn’t have to leave the town we loved, we would still be a part of a neighborhood yet we could have a house where we had plenty of space and everyone got their own bedroom.
The vision became a reality. We built that house and the swimming pool in the back, not to mention the screened-in porch and a sunny deck. Our family loves nothing more than entertaining. The casual kind where friends just drop by for a quick visit and you convince them to stay for dinner and the formal kind where you put a tent out back, serve cocktails by the pool and celebrate a big occasion with dinner and dancing for 100. I don’t think there’s been a holiday over the last seventeen years where we haven’t had extended family over to celebrate with us.
Our kids are grown now, living out on their own, a couple of them married with babies. It’s time for us to downsize, but my husband and I will always look at this house and this yard and agree that it was the very best purchase we’ve ever made. I hope that the people who buy it will be blessed by the karma of great memories we’ve made here, and have as many happy times as we have.”
