Make The Most Of Your Labor Day In The DC Metro Area

Don’t Let Summer End Before Taking Advantage of These Free Outdoor Outings

The summer may be coming to an end but the DC metro area is just getting started! Our team compiled a list of some bucket-list, must-do outdoor activities before those leaves start falling.

1.  Take a tour of DC’s street art.

Whether it’s a piece of art you happened upon during a stroll in the city or an intentional self-guided tour, take advantage of the good weather and find your new favorite wall mural this summer. This map guide features enough murals to fill an entire day with DC’s underrated artwork. Not sure where to start? Our team recommends Blagden Alley, as it’s frequently considered DC’s open-air street art museum neighborhood.

2. Have a picnic on the National Mall.

What’s the best place in Washington DC for lunch? No, it’s not that posh pop-up spot near Logan Circle. It’s America's front yard. Pack a blanket, spread out, and soak in the beauty of our nation’s capital.

3. Walk the Spanish steps.

On 22nd Street in charming Dupont Circle you can find the most romantic spot in all of DC. Bring a picnic, a good book, or simply sit by the fountain. This gem hidden in the shaded trees and bustling streets of the city is a must-see.

4. Visit a Smithsonian Museum outside.

“America’s Museums” are always free! While the Smithsonian offers a multitude of museum and gallery experiences -- eleven on the National Mall alone -- the perfect choice is clear if you’re searching for an outdoor museum activity. Consider the Smithsonian Gardens to view sculptures, outdoor artwork, and elegantly intentional gardens.

5. Enjoy a movie at The Wharf

This summer activity is sure to make any movie buff’s evening. From family friendly movies to the perfect cinema with friends, this free event offers a variety of films every Thursday Evening at 8:00 PM at The Wharf. While this series is free, seating is limited so be sure to pre-register to reserve your seat

6. Get grooving at Sligo Creek Golf Course

Back by popular demand! The Sligo Summer Concert Series proves to be the can't-miss outdoor event each Friday evening. Enjoy free live music, fun, free surprises from Donna Kerr Group, and the best BBQ in MoCo (available for purchase) each Friday night this Summer from 6:00-8:00PM. Be sure to stop by our booth and say hello! We’d love to meet you!

Whether it’s a day of art, a history lesson, or an evening of fun, there’s so much to love about the DC area during Summer and into Fall. We hope this list inspires you to soak in the rest of the summer, find some creative ways to enjoy the outdoors, and have fun.
